Baroque to Byzantine Adventure
Sicily, where ancient civilizations and baroque beauty meet, is a land of striking contrasts—volcanic landscapes, sun-soaked villages, and a rich culinary heritage. From Catania’s lively streets to the timeless charm of Ortigia, every stop reveals a new layer of history and culture.
We begin in Catania, a city shaped by lava and legend. A guided walk introduces us to its historic heart before we settle in for an aperitivo and a welcome dinner, savouring the bold flavours of Sicilian cuisine. The next morning, we ascend the craters of Mount Etna, taking in the raw power of Europe’s highest active volcano. In Taormina, we visit the ancient Greek theatre, its arches framing the shimmering Ionian Sea. As the day winds down, we head to Siracusa for a group dinner by the waterfront.
Our time in Ortigia, the historic quarter of Siracusa, is immersive. A private artisan tour connects us with local craftspeople, followed by a market lunch where Sicilian flavours come alive. In the afternoon, we take a boat tour, seeing Ortigia from the water before enjoying free time and another shared dinner experience. The next day, we explore Castello Maniace and Palazzo Bellomo, then visit a lemon grove and an olive oil estate for a guided tasting. In the hilltop towns of Buscemi and Palazzolo Acreide, we uncover Sicily’s rural traditions, from the Museum of Old Handcrafts to the Greek theatre and archaeological museum. The evening is free to dine at your leisure.
Heading south, we indulge in a wine tasting, then visit the Villa Romana del Tellaro, home to exquisite Roman mosaics. In Marzamemi, a charming fishing village, we enjoy a relaxed lunch by the sea before continuing to Noto, where we admire grand baroque facades and sample pastries at Caffè Sicilia. Back in Ortigia, we gather for a group dinner, reflecting on Sicily’s rich heritage.
Our final day takes us through the baroque towns of Ragusa and Scicli, with a stop at the noble Castle Donnafugata. In Ragusa Ibla, we admire the breathtaking hilltop views before a leisurely lunch. The journey ends in Scicli, a hidden gem of golden-hued palaces, before we return to Ortigia for a farewell dinner, celebrating the unforgettable experiences we’ve shared.
